Throughout the 1980’s Imhoff had commented on how bad most Christmas cards were, and that Christmas itself was over commercialised. ‘Hay Plains. 1989’ was the first of an ongoing series featuring pissing Santa’s. Over the next 15 years, until suffering a career ending illness in 2004, he produced personal Christmas cards with Santa somewhere in the world. Usually at a significant location that had featured during the year. Santa’s pose was always kept relatively subtle and, at times, Santa would hold a map so Imhoff could convince enquiring authorities that Santa was actually looking at the map.
